The Most Important Thing to Know: Thailand's Two Monsoons

Thailand has two separate coastlines with completely different rainfall patterns — the most critical planning distinction most travellers miss.

The Andaman Coast (west side: Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Phi Phi Islands) receives the full force of the southwest monsoon:

• Dry season: November to April — calm, clear seas; ideal for boats, diving, and island-hopping
• Wet season: May to October — heavy, sustained rain; rough seas frequently close boat services to outer islands; many dive operators and beach clubs close

The Gulf Coast (east side: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) has an opposite pattern:

• Dry season: February to September — this is when the Gulf is at its best
• Wet season: October to December — the wettest months; November is the rainiest

Practical implication: In June–August, when Phuket has heavy rain, Koh Samui is sunny and perfect. In November, when Phuket is perfect, Koh Samui is in its wettest month. If you're visiting in October–November, go to Phuket and Krabi. If you're visiting in June–August, go to Koh Samui and Koh Tao.

Southern Thailand — Andaman Coast

Best For

Beach holidays, island-hopping, world-class diving and snorkelling, rock climbing, dramatic limestone cliffs, nightlife (Phuket), and one of Asia's most beautiful coastlines.

Key Destinations

Phuket is Thailand's largest island and most developed beach destination — luxury resorts, diverse nightlife, international dining, and a base for boat trips to the outer islands. Patong Beach is the centre of nightlife and beach action; Kata and Karon are more family-oriented; the less-visited north of the island (Naithon, Nai Yang) is quieter. Old Phuket Town, with its Sino-Portuguese shophouses, is excellent for a day of café-hopping and local food.

• Best beach: Kata Noi (small, sheltered, beautiful); Nai Harn (locals' favourite)
• Best for diving: Similan Islands (accessible Oct–May only by liveaboard — among Asia's top 10 dive sites), Phi Phi Islands, Shark Point
• Best time: November to April

Krabi offers the most dramatic scenery on the Andaman Coast — sheer limestone karsts rising from the sea, turquoise water, and the impossibly picturesque Railay Beach (accessible only by boat). Ao Nang is the main mainland hub; Railay Beach is the showpiece; the Four Islands and Hong Islands are day-trip highlights.

• Best beach: Railay Beach (one of Asia's most photographed)
• Best activity: Rock climbing on the karst formations (Krabi is among the world's top sport-climbing destinations)
• Best for: Couples, nature lovers, climbers
• Best time: November to April

Koh Lanta is the quieter, more laid-back alternative to Phuket and Krabi — a long island with calm west-coast beaches, a charming Old Town, and a genuinely unhurried pace. Excellent for families and those seeking relaxation over nightlife.

• Best beach: Long Beach (Hat Khlong Dao)
• Best time: November to April

Phi Phi Islands — two islands (Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Ley) accessible by boat from Phuket and Krabi. Maya Bay on Phi Phi Ley (the filming location of The Beach) is one of Thailand's most iconic sights. Phi Phi Don has excellent snorkelling and backpacker accommodation. Avoid in high season (December–February) if you dislike crowds.

• Best time: November to April; Maya Bay reopened to limited visitor numbers in 2022 after 4-year closure

Similan Islands — a marine national park 84 km off the Phang Nga coast, consistently ranked among the top 10 dive sites in Asia. Granite boulders, coral gardens, visibility up to 30m, leopard sharks, barracuda, manta rays (seasonal). Accessible only October to May by day trip or liveaboard. The islands are officially uninhabited and pristine.

Andaman Coast — Practical Information

• Getting there: Phuket International Airport (HKT) has flights from Bangkok (1 hr 15 min, from 900 THB), and international connections from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and major Asian hubs. Krabi Airport (KBV) serves Bangkok (1 hr 15 min) and some international routes.
• Island-hopping: Speedboat and ferry services connect Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, and Phi Phi (50 min to 2 hrs). Services are significantly reduced or stopped May–October.
• Budget: Mid-range to high. Budget guesthouses from 600 THB/night; mid-range 1,500–3,000 THB; luxury 5,000+ THB. Meals: street food 50–80 THB; restaurant 200–500 THB.

Southern Thailand — Gulf Coast

Best For

Beaches with a different seasonal rhythm to Phuket, backpacker culture and Full Moon Party (Koh Phangan), diving certification (Koh Tao is one of the world's most affordable PADI Open Water destinations), and a more relaxed vibe than the developed Andaman Coast.

Key Destinations

Koh Samui is the Gulf Coast's premium island — luxury resorts, beautiful beaches, waterfalls, and a sophisticated food scene. Chaweng Beach is the most active; Lamai is more relaxed; the north coast (Mae Nam) is quietest. Worth visiting for its combination of beach, culture (Big Buddha Temple, Na Muang Waterfalls), and dining quality.

• Best beach: Maenam for quiet; Chaweng for activity
• Best time: February–September

Koh Phangan is famous for its Full Moon Party (Haad Rin beach) but is genuinely beautiful away from the party scene. The north and west coasts (Bottle Beach, Than Sadet waterfall) are pristine and quiet. Good snorkelling around Ang Thong National Marine Park.

• Full Moon Party: Monthly on the full moon (book accommodation 3+ months ahead for peak months)
• Best time: February–September (same as Koh Samui)

Koh Tao is one of the world's most popular and affordable places to get PADI certified. PADI Open Water courses cost approximately 9,500–11,000 THB ($260–$300 USD) — significantly cheaper than the Maldives or European dive destinations. The island has 25+ dive sites including Chumphon Pinnacle (whale sharks, June–August), Southwest Pinnacle (large pelagic fish), and HTMS Sattakut wreck (30m).

• PADI Open Water: ~9,500–11,000 THB (includes all equipment, certification fee)
• Best time: April–September for diving (best visibility and calmest waters)

Gulf Coast — Practical Information

• Getting there: Surat Thani Airport (URT) is the main gateway — flights from Bangkok (1 hr, from 700 THB), then ferry to Koh Samui (1.5 hrs) or Koh Phangan (3 hrs). Bangkok Airways flies directly to Koh Samui (USM) — more expensive but convenient.
• Budget: Similar to Andaman Coast. Koh Tao is the most budget-friendly diving destination in Thailand.

Northern Thailand

Best For

Ancient temples, mountain scenery, hill tribe villages, ethical elephant sanctuaries, adventure activities (zip-lining, trekking, mountain biking), cooler weather, Chiang Mai's acclaimed food scene, and the surreal White Temple and Blue Temple in Chiang Rai.

Key Destinations

Chiang Mai is Thailand's second city and the cultural capital of the north — 300+ Buddhist temples, a beautifully preserved Old City moat, exceptional food (khao soi curry is the city's signature dish), and the highest concentration of ethical elephant sanctuaries in Southeast Asia. The Sunday Walking Street Market and Night Bazaar are among Thailand's best markets.

• Can't-miss: Doi Suthep temple (15 km from city, hillside views); Wat Chedi Luang (historic Old City temple); Elephant Nature Park (highly rated ethical sanctuary)
• Best time: November to February (cool, dry; peak is December–January)
• Avoid: March–April (smoke and haze from agricultural burning — air quality can be very poor)

Chiang Rai is a quieter, more authentic city 200 km north of Chiang Mai near the Myanmar and Laos borders. Home to the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun — contemporary Buddhist masterpiece in white glass and plaster) and the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten). The Golden Triangle (confluence of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos rivers) is 45 minutes away.

Pai is a small mountain town in Mae Hong Son Province, 130 km northwest of Chiang Mai — a backpacker and hippie enclave with waterfalls, hot springs, motorbike roads through mountain scenery, and a chilled atmosphere. 3-day road trips from Chiang Mai to Pai along the Mae Hong Son loop (1,864 curves!) are a classic Northern Thailand experience.

Doi Inthanon National Park contains Thailand's highest peak (2,565m) with cool temperatures, twin royal pagodas with spectacular views, and the Ang Ka nature trail through cloud forest. A refreshing escape from lowland heat year-round.

Northern Thailand — Practical Information

• Getting there: Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) — frequent flights from Bangkok (1 hr 10 min, from 700 THB), Chiang Rai, and some international routes from Singapore and Hong Kong.
• From Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai: 3 hrs by bus or 1 hr by domestic flight.

Central Thailand — Bangkok and Beyond

Best For

First-time visitors to Thailand, city culture, world-class street food, luxury shopping, temples and palaces, day trips to Ayutthaya and Kanchanaburi, and onward connections to the rest of Thailand.

Key Destinations

Bangkok is one of Asia's greatest cities, a paradox of ancient temples and hypermodern shopping malls, street food at 3 AM, and rooftop bars overlooking a river lined with gleaming temples. The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (Emerald Buddha) is mandatory; Wat Pho (Reclining Buddha, Bangkok's oldest temple) is equally impressive. The Chao Phraya River boat service is the best (and cheapest) way to connect the main sights. Bangkok's street food scene, particularly in Chinatown (Yaowarat) and around Victory Monument, is among the best in the world.

• Can't-miss: Grand Palace + Wat Phra Kaew (entry 500 THB); Wat Arun at sunset; Floating Market (Damnoen Saduak, 1 hr from Bangkok); Chatuchak Weekend Market

Ayutthaya — a UNESCO World Heritage Site 85 km north of Bangkok, accessible as a half-day or full-day trip. The ancient capital of the Siamese Kingdom (1350–1767) contains extraordinary brick-and-laterite temple ruins, including the famous headless Buddha image with its head entwined in Banyan tree roots. Best explored by bicycle (rental 50 THB/day) or tuk-tuk.

Kanchanaburi — 140 km west of Bangkok; site of the Death Railway and Bridge on the River Kwai (from the 1957 film). A profoundly moving historical destination combined with the natural beauty of the Erawan waterfall (7 tiers of turquoise pools) and limestone caves.

Central Thailand — Practical Information

• Getting there: Bangkok has two international airports — Suvarnabhumi (BKK, main hub) and Don Mueang (DMK, budget airlines). Both connect by rail to the city centre.
• Getting around Bangkok: BTS Skytrain, MRT Metro, and Chao Phraya ferry cover most tourist destinations. Grab (Southeast Asian Uber) is reliable and affordable (30–150 THB for most city trips).
• Budget: Bangkok offers excellent value with guesthouses from 300–600 THB/night in Khao San Road and Silom areas; mid-range hotels 1,000–2,500 THB.

Eastern Thailand — Gulf Coast and Koh Chang

Best For

Quieter islands closer to Bangkok, Cambodian border adventures, nature reserves, and a more local, less-touristy atmosphere than the Andaman or Gulf.

Koh Chang ("Elephant Island") — Thailand's second-largest island, 6 hours from Bangkok by bus and ferry. Mountainous, forested, and less developed than Koh Samui — waterfalls, jungle trekking, and good snorkelling (November–May). The west coast beaches (White Sand Beach, Lonely Beach) are the most developed.

Pattaya — 150 km from Bangkok, known for its nightlife and beach scene. Better suited to those who value proximity to Bangkok and beach access over pristine scenery. The Sanctuary of Truth (an all-wood temple under 40 years of continuous construction) is worth a day visit.

Northeast Thailand (Isan) — Off the Beaten Path

Best For

Authentic Thai culture, Khmer temple ruins, silk weaving villages, wildlife reserves, and travellers who want to experience Thailand far from tourist infrastructure.

Khao Yai National Park — 3 hours from Bangkok; Thailand's oldest national park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), home to elephants, Indochinese tigers, gibbons, and one of Asia's finest waterfalls (Haew Narok, 150m). Night wildlife tours regularly spot herds of elephants and bear-cat sightings.

Phimai Historical Park — Khmer temple complex pre-dating Angkor Wat, with a remarkable 11th–12th century sanctuary rivalling anything in Cambodia. Entry 100 THB; almost tourist-free.

Khao Phanom Rung — A 10th–12th century Khmer Hindu temple on an extinct volcano crater in Buriram Province. Perfectly aligned with the sunrise through all 15 doorways during the Khmer New Year (April) — one of Thailand's most spectacular annual events.
